History of The Miracle League
In
1997 Rockdale Youth Baseball Association’s coach, Eddie Bagwell, invited the
first child with special needs to play baseball on his team. Eddie watched as
this seven year old in his wheel chair attended every game and practice while
cheering on his five year old brother as he played America’s favorite pastime.
In
1998, the Rockdale Youth Baseball Association, in Georgia, formed the Miracle League
for children with special needs to further its mission of providing opportunities
for all youngsters to play baseball regardless of their ability. The league
began with 35 players on 4 teams. By the spring of 2001, over 250 players
filled the Miracle League rosters.
Presently there are 200
Miracle League Organizations across the country including Puerto
Rico, 80 completed rubberized fields, and 100 fields under
construction. The Miracle League is proud to serve over 80,000
children and young adults with disabilities.
